About This Project

Hi friend! Welcome in. It means alot that you've stopped by my mission's page. Below you'll find a little bit about me and my calling. I hope to be able to share more with you in the future. Blessings!

The World is Calling

A small-town boy with a heart for the world. That’s me in a nutshell. You see, it seems that from the moment I took my very first breath, I could already hear the world exuberantly calling my name. Brandon, come, explore! And believe you me, I wanted to, but at such a young age, that was hardly possible. Fortunately, God had the perfect task in mind to keep my adventure-thirsty brain occupied: studying languages. Yes, it’s the gift he gave me at birth and the thing that has always kept me engaged in His greater calling upon my life: missions.

So, that was me as a child, delightfully lost in my world of maps and language books, when, at the age of 9, something happened that would change my life forever. Jesus called me to salvation. I remember it like it was yesterday. There I was at that sweet, down-home church revival — the 9th one I had attended, I suppose, seeing as I had grown up in church — singing good ole hymns and listening to the pastor bring the Word, when God stirred my heart. The Gospel I had heard time and time again before suddenly made sense to me. “I need this,” I thought. So, right then and there, I gave my life to Jesus, and He’s had me on an adventure ever since.

Nothing will ever top that moment, of course, but what did come next would define the course of the rest of my life.

It was 2004. I was 17 years old. I had no idea it was coming. And then, it just happened — God gave me the green light to GO! Yes! He had me heading out to Yekaterinburg, Russia on mission with my church to share the Good News. It was amazing, and even quite comical at times! Who knew that on my first trip out of the US, I’d find myself dressed in a hilarious, oversized, wildly colorful clown costume, complete with a giant red nose, standing in front of a room full of giggling kindergartners who were clearly all about it; or that I’d find myself in a courtyard outside an old, industrial, Soviet-style apartment block teaching English to a group of Russian teenagers; or that I would sit and share the love of Jesus with a couple of babushkas (Russian grandmas) wearing their adorable bonnets as they grinned from ear to ear; or that I would get to help repaint an orphanage alongside sweet orphaned children, and let them know that they are loved and valued. Who knew that all of this would happen? God knew! And so began the shaping of my heart for missions, although I wasn’t fully aware of it at that time.

The years following that maiden voyage to Russia were nothing short of spectacular with regard to travel. I ventured to 21 more nations spanning 4 continents. One of those nations would prove to be captivating, and it would come as a total surprise to me, for it had never piqued my interest before. That was China. It was 2012, a particularly transitionary period in my life, as I had just finished teaching 2 years as a Speech-Language Pathologist and needed to make decisions about what direction my career would take in the future. It was at that very moment that I heard the world calling my name again. Brandon, come, explore! Having those 2 years of teaching under my belt meant finding an English teaching job abroad would be possible, and so God began to move my heart in that direction. Before I knew it, I was on a plane and headed for Shanghai. “What am I doing,” I thought. At the same time, though, I had such a peace. Fast forward a year, China had somehow completely captured my heart. I loved the food, the people, the culture, and the LANGUAGE. Although my primary reason for going was to teach, I managed to pick up quite a bit of the language. Coincidental? Not at all. That’s just like our God. Who could’ve known at that moment I landed that I would go on to pursue a bachelor’s and master’s in Chinese; or that I would one day use the Chinese skills I’d acquire to help minister to 20-30 Chinese visiting scholars at my church; or that I’d help with interpretation on a church vision trip to Taiwan, and while there, learn the location of my future (career) mission. Only our God could’ve known! It was all part of His plan — the plan He had begun unveiling the moment I took that very first breath.

I’m awestruck at what His hands can do. When I connect all the dots, I can but rejoice and reply, “Here I am, Lord, send me”. I’m excited for the future and so blessed to be able to serve God in this way. I don’t think I’ll ever stop marveling at how God would choose a small-town boy like me to go and be His messenger of hope in the wilds of East Asia.

*As a career missionary, I will be on the field for stints of 4 years, then stateside for 1 year.
