A new school in Bao Village
Cambodia still has a sizeable illiterate population in the
countryside due to the missing generation of schools and teachers
after the Khmer Rouge genocide. When OMF first came to Snuol in
2006 we began to invest in adult literacy work. The
assistant director for education in Snuol, Lok Kru Teab, liked
what we were trying to do with adult literacy in Snuol. However,
Teab thought long-term it would be even better to focus on
literacy for the children. Yes, there are adults who can’t read,
but in Snuol there are kids waiting for that opportunity as well.
OMF began working with Teab hiring and following up with local
teachers in low resource areas. We were able to help start
several rural schools, just by being there to fill the gap until
a government teacher could come. This past November, after the
school year started, we received another call from Teab to do the
same in the remote village of Bao. These pictures show the
one-room school where first and second grade are being taught
this year. In this case, there are about 25 students in
first grade and another 20 in second grade, not enough to
officially begin a school and not enough to be eligible for a
government teacher. Through you, we were able to help get things
started for these 45 students. This year all total we are
supporting 8 teachers in six villages. Thank you for making
this possible.
