Unbelievable American Host Family Experience!
“If I told people in
my country what my American host family was like, they wouldn’t
believe me!” observed one of our international
friends on the long drive home from our ski-retreat weekend in
northern Wisconsin. In his ‘frontier unreached people group’ in
Asia, people often assume that all Americans are immoral,
behaving as badly as the characters in Hollywood movies. It’s
understandable why most people of his religion and culture think
that all Americans are Christians, and if Christians live like
people in the movies the US exports, then their culture’s strict
religion is superior in truth and morality to Christianity.
We took six internationals from various countries, including two Fulbright Scholars, on this weekend retreat. We all stayed with host families from Salem Church of Ashland, and it was a lifechanging experience for our international friends! Many of them had never downhill skied before, never stayed with an American host family, and never been to a church before! It was a weekend of many ‘firsts’ for our beloved international friends!
