Sea Caves Kayak Retreat
Last weekend a friend and I got to lead a group of eight international friends on a pilgrimage of sorts to where I grew up in northern Wisconsin, to kayak the sea caves of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. When most people think of Wisconsin, they think of 'America's Dairyland,' cheese, farm fields, and lots of lactose rich foods. This is pretty true of the southern half of WI, but the northern half of the state we call 'the northwoods,' and is mainly forests, rivers, lakes, and lots of wild places. It was a memorable weekend full of lots of deep conversations, building stronger friendships, and outdoor fun together. Many thanks to Karin and Steve, to Tom and Paula, and other friends who helped make this happen.
There's something about shared challenges which bonds people together. This trip was no exception. The conversations we had on hiking trails, on the beach, and in the car journeying to and from Lake Superior were so positive and memorable. The spiritual depth we were able to attain in a short time, even with a new international friend, was extremely encouraging.
